Recruiting Ryland Grace by Force

The Unwilling Scientist
A Visit from the Taskforce
Eva Stratt, head of the Petrova Taskforce, appears in Ryland Grace's classroom while he is teaching. She has the authority of every UN member nation. She informs Grace that he will be the lead scientist on the Astrophage problem. Grace refuses, but Stratt has already arranged for FBI agents to escort him to a secret lab. She is not taking no for an answer.
The Lab in San Francisco
Grace is taken to a fully equipped biology lab. Stratt explains that the 'dots' from the ArcLight probe are likely alien life, and she needs Grace to study them. Despite his protests, he is forced to work. Stratt's pragmatism is clear: she will sacrifice individual freedoms for the survival of humanity.
The First Contact
Grace reluctantly agrees to examine the Astrophage. Stratt watches through a glass window, demanding results. She isolates him from the rest of the scientific community, using him as a guinea pig to test for any dangers. This ruthless approach defines her character: she is willing to put one man at risk to save billions.
Legal Battles and Power Plays

Above the Law
The Intellectual Property Alliance Lawsuit
Stratt attends a U.S. District Court hearing where the Intellectual Property Alliance sues her for copying copyrighted materials onto the Hail Mary's data banks. She dismisses the case with a preemptive pardon from the President and a treaty granting her immunity. She orders the bailiff to stand down, backed by the U.S. Army. The judge is powerless.
Global Coordination
Stratt's authority extends to all nations. She commands Chinese aircraft carriers, redirects Russian Soyuz missions, and forces the Sahara Desert to be paved with blackpanels. No one can refuse her. She uses this power to accelerate the project, but her methods create resentment and moral compromises.
The Cost of Efficiency
Stratt's decisions are always driven by speed. She orders the nuclear bombing of Antarctica to release methane, a desperate measure to buy time. She forces Dr. Leclerc to implement the plan despite his environmentalist principles. She is unsentimental, focused only on the mission's success.
The Forced Conscription of Grace

A Coward Drafted
The Explosion and the Vacancy
After the Baikonur explosion kills Martin DuBois and Annie Shapiro, Stratt needs a new science specialist. She reveals that Grace has the coma-resistance genes and has been training implicitly. Grace refuses, citing fear and his duty to teach children. Stratt calls him a coward and orders his arrest.
The Imprisonment
Grace is held in a cell. Stratt visits him, explaining her reasoning: the apocalypse is inevitable without the mission. She uses a French amnesia drug to ensure he will forget his resistance. She forces him onto the Soyuz. The moral weight of this act is heavy, but Stratt justifies it as necessary.
The Outcome
Stratt's plan works perfectly. Grace's memory is wiped, and he wakes up at Tau Ceti committed to the mission. She never faces consequences for her actions, but her legacy is that of a savior who sacrificed her own humanity to save humanity.
